The idea of wearing dentures, even partial dentures, is often a difficult one to swallow, no matter what your age. But if you are missing a tooth, leaving a gap in your mouth is an even worse option. It can lead to difficulties if your teeth shift or your jaw and gum begin to deteriorate. Fortunately, if your gum and jaw tissue is in good condition, there is an excellent alternative to dentures available to you. Dental Implant Anatomy

Dental implants are small pieces of titanium that get implanted into your jaw where the root of your missing tooth used to be. Implant dentistry has been practiced for several decades and produces consistent results for patients with missing teeth.

Your dental implant will be made of three pieces:

  • The titanium implant
  • A titanium or gold abutment
  • A porcelain tooth crown

These three pieces connect to replace your missing tooth in a natural-looking way. Only the porcelain tooth crown will be visible once the implant is completely placed. It will be shaped like your natural tooth and tinted to match the color of your surrounding teeth.

Dental Implant Procedure

Before a dental implant can be placed, Dumont implant dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter must first examine your gums and jawbone to determine whether they are healthy enough to support a dental implant. Once placed in your jawbone, the dental implant may require a period of several months to allow the bone material to grow around it and secure it in place. This process is called osseointegration. The abutment will be attached to your implant once osseointegration is complete, and Dr. Perlmutter can then place a crown on top, giving you a brand new tooth.

All-on-4 Dental Implants

Dental implants can also be used to support fixed dentures. This procedure uses four dental implants to support the denture when most or all teeth are either missing or decayed beyond the point of repair. The procedure uses two shorter dental implants near the front of the mouth and longer implants angled at the back to more effectively stabilize the restoration. The All-on-4 procedure allows Dr. Perlmutter to provide you with a full set of completely new teeth in a single office visit.
