Questions about Sedation Dentistry
Serving Dumont, Bergenfield, Paramus, Haworth, Bergen County and surrounding New Jersey areas
What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry uses anesthesia techniques to help you relax during your procedure. Local anesthesia is used to numb the area directly around the teeth that Dumont sedation dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter will be treating. However, if you experience unusually high levels of anxiety when undergoing dental treatment, he may also recommend other forms of anesthesia to put you into a semi-conscious state, from which you will awaken with little or no memory of the procedure. Common methods of sedation include:
- Oral sedation
- IV sedation
- Nitrous oxide
What are the benefits of sedation dentistry?
The main benefit of sedation dentistry is its ability to help you feel calm and relaxed while undergoing difficult or long dental procedures. However, it also provides patients suffering from acute dental anxiety with the ability to undergo treatment without the emotional stress that they usually experience.
Who is a good candidate for sedation dentistry?
Anyone who experiences high levels of fear or anxiety during dental treatment may be a good candidate for sedation dentistry. Patients that tend to have a highly sensitive or exaggerated gagging reflex also benefit from sedation dentistry. However, sedation dentistry can also benefit patients who are undergoing long procedures or multiple procedures during the same appointment.
Is Dr. Perlmutter experienced at performing sedation dentistry?
Dr. Perlmutter has completed more than 120 hours of enteral sedation dentistry through the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS). He has treated many patients with sedation dentistry techniques, helping them achieve a more comfortable and relaxed dental experience.
Is sedation dentistry safe?
There is some amount of risk with any type of sedation, but the type of sedation offered by Dr. Perlmutter very rarely produces complications. Dr. Perlmutter has received certification in CPR and Advanced Cardiac Life Support in order to increase safety levels for his patients.
